About Me

The future of UNIZA starts today

Prof. Ing. Branislav Hadzima, PhD.

Candidate for Rector of UNIZA 2026-2030

For more than thirty years, my professional and personal life has been connected with the University of Žilina. I came to Žilina as a mechanical engineering student – fascinated by how materials are created, change, and how they influence the world around us. This fascination has remained with me to this day. I am a materials engineer and researcher, I focus on corrosion and innovative surface treatments of metals, especially magnesium and its alloys. In 2013, together with colleagues, we received great trust: to establish the UNIZA Research Center. I became its first director, and since then it has been a place where curiosity, knowledge and the desire to move the university forward meet.
Prof. Ing. Branislav Hadzima, PhD.

My Vision

We create the university together – students, educators, researchers and staff. I want each of us to be able to say: We are proud to be UNIZA. That's why my vision is built on these pillars:

Proud of Education

Our university must provide modern and fair education that prepares students and educators for a world full of changes. Everyone should feel they are growing here personally and professionally. Education is a two-way process, not just information transfer. Students learn from educators and educators from their students, from their questions, ideas and practice. Education we will rightfully be proud of. Proud of graduates, employer satisfaction, educated personalities. Proud of a university that develops critical thinking, collaboration and courage to innovate. We want to open new interdisciplinary programs, closely linked with industrial, social and academic practice and in line with modern trends including the use of artificial intelligence in every field. Teach more effectively, create more and discover new ways of thinking.

Proud of Research

We are a university that supports doctoral students, supervisors and young research teams. We want to actively involve engineering students in research work and transfer new ideas further. We will create a strong doctoral school center as a tool for communication, soft skills and support for gaining international experience. We will be proud of research that has social significance, international quality and ethical foundation. Support research that advances knowledge. Be European leaders in defined fields with global reach. Research that inspires future generations and pushes the boundaries of knowledge and our university.

Proud of Collaboration

The university is a community, not an administrative structure. We will collaborate across faculties, fields and workplaces wherever UNIZA operates. We will support the importance of technical education in Slovakia across society, which is the engine of our economy, is the fundamental and proud pillar for collaboration. We will strengthen the natural ties of northern Slovakia, Moravia and southern Poland – especially between the cities of Žilina, Ostrava and Katowice, which share common history, industry and research potential. We are closer than it seems at first glance – and it is precisely in this closeness that we see space for new partnerships, innovations, regional development, joint education and research.

Proud of Innovation

Innovations don't arise by themselves. They are created by space, trust and support. We will strengthen knowledge transfer so that the university, region and society benefit from it. We will create conditions for the establishment of public-private research workplaces and centers where young talents can apply themselves already during their studies. So that teams of creative people work on the demands of society and industry. So that they create innovations we will be proud of for their economic or social benefits.

Proud of Conditions and Equal Opportunities

The university should be a place where everyone can grow regardless of origin, age, field or life situation. We will create dignified conditions: a safe, respectful environment, mental health support, fair remuneration and actually functioning services. Support for young scientists, support for returns after parental leave, flexible forms of work and opportunities for further education will be the foundation for sustainable development of our university. Pride is not just about results, but about how people feel here. As a community that respects each other and helps each other grow.

Proud of the University – Building Community

We want a university we are proud of not only for its results, but also for its culture. A place where people feel safe, respected and as part of a community, where academic life connects with university life. A university for everyone, for students and for employees, to be part of an environment that supports and develops them not only during teaching and scientific work, but also beyond it. The university should be a place everyone is happy to return to, not just for the degree, but for the values they gained here.

Together we will create a university we will be proud of

We greatly appreciate the open communication, constructive approach and ability to find solutions that are fair for all parties while being sustainable in the long term. This is an exemplary case of university-company collaboration that has real impact: it brings students relevant assignments and contact with market reality, increases the practical value of teaching for the university, and helps companies build quality talent and innovation. We are convinced that this style of leadership and collaboration is exactly what universities need today. We believe that Prof. Hadzima can bring significant success to university employees, strengthen their working conditions and motivation, and further develop strategic partnerships with companies in line with industry requirements. Prof. Ing. Peter Palček, PhD.

Professor, Supervisor, Department of Materials Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering UNIZA

"I have known Prof. Ing. Branislav Hadzima, PhD. since his student days and have long followed his professional and personal growth. During his doctoral studies, when he chose a challenging topic in the field of magnesium alloy corrosion, he demonstrated a high degree of expertise and personal commitment. At that time, our workplace had minimal experience in this area and the instrumentation was very limited, yet he managed to create a quality working environment and achieve significant results. First, he constructed a functional device for monitoring electrochemical characteristics that could also be used for other metal alloys, and then thoroughly developed and verified methodologies for determining the corrosion resistance of evaluated materials. This significantly contributed to the development of research at our workplace. Here his determination, perseverance and ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with experts at home and abroad were fully demonstrated. I have had a similarly positive experience during his preparation for habilitation and later for his appointment as professor. Although he met all formal requirements, he systematically continued with further scientific, project and pedagogical activities to clearly demonstrate that he was a strong and competent candidate in both his scientific and pedagogical fields. In addition, he demonstrated excellent managerial skills, not only in organizing professional events, but also in establishing and developing new university workplaces. Based on my long-standing personal and professional experience with Prof. Hadzima, I consider his candidacy for rector of our university to be very suitable and fully support it."
